Since superheroes crashed onto the American scene, their identities have been incorporated into comics, movies, and television. Spider-Man got his theme song from a 1967 animated show; a Black Nick Fury hails from Samuel L. Jackson, and Wolverine has developed a habit for bar fights. In Insomniac’s “Wolverine” trailer, the character’s trope takes center stage again.
Hugh Jackman’s first appearance as Wolverine was at a dive bar
The gruff mutant has long possessed a rough and rowdy demeanor. Of all the members of the X-Men, Logan was the most likely to get into a fight in a bar. Lonely and outcast, Wolverine has often isolated himself from mainstream society.
Insomniacs Wolverine is channeling that aspect for their trailer.
Bryan Singer, director of 2000 X Men film, considered how to portray these aspects of the introduction of Logan’s character. As they say, first impressions are everything.
In one of the film’s most memorable scenes, Anna Paquin’s Snape encountered Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine at a dive bar. When a debt collector attempts to advance on Logan, he wedges the man with his adamantium claws against the wall.
Its last claw slips, resting just above the man’s Adam apple.
This initial introduction set the stage for Hugh Jackman’s portrayal of the character until his last performance as a mutant in 2017.
Insomniac’s ‘Wolverine’ Inspired by Fox’s ‘X-Men’ Franchise Trend
This trend of Jackman in bars continued throughout his run as Wolverine. In X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Wolverine fights Sabretooth in a bar.
X-Men: First Class saw a hilarious exchange between Jackman’s Wolverine, James McAvoy, and Michael Fassbender. Professor X (McAvoy) and Magneto (Fassbender) try to recruit Wolverine from a bar, but he quickly fires them with a “fuck you”.
The last big-screen portrayal of the mutant in a dilapidated bar (so far) was in The glutton. In another violent confrontation, Logan jumping from one secluded bar to another has become a staple for the character in recent years.
ScreenRant notes that the bar in the game’s trailer matches the other bars Wolverine has appeared in.
âThe bar itself certainly fits the trope; it looks like little more than a pool hall, with handwritten boards on the board and stickers all over the taps, âthey said.
Insomniac’s ‘Wolverine’ takes a look at his self-isolating nature
The group revealed very little information about the actual game. However, based on Insomniac’s history with Spider Man and Spider-Man: Miles Morales, the game is likely to draw inspiration from comics, movies, and shows.
Even though the trailer bar doesn’t appear in the final version, Wolverine in a dive bar is almost certain.
The PlayStation Showcase in September gave fans the bare minimum of an announcement for the game. In fact, there wasn’t even a release date listed.
However, that never stopped fans from frantic theorizing.
And as a man walks up to Logan with a knife at the end of the trailer, fans know the fight is just beginning.
Wolverine is sure to wave his claws again soon.
